This is for Maggie--who says that my blog is eternally boring.

Yesterday I worked as a volunteer in Eliza's 3rd grade class.  They tend to be given worksheets that are just above their ability level.  I find myself slipping the answers to them as I don't know how to help them.  One day the teacher caught me, and she told me the kids actually have a thesaurus in their desk.  Okay, so I was busted.  Yesterday, I was definitely not going to give answers.  The worksheet instructions were to find the word pairs.  Example:  Salt and ______.

(answer: pepper)  Other obvious ones were: up and "down", back and "forth", sticks and "stones", cat and "dog or mouse".  You get the idea.  Some were just not so evident.  Lock and "key", Body and "mind or soul".  Peace and--was a real toughie, they had no clue.  And I didn't know how to help them.  How do you explain this to 8 year olds?  Burgers and-- provided another challenge among the Indian girls.  They kept guessing Cheeseburgers.  Hammer and--I thought would be crystal clear too, but sadly no.  They guessed screwdrivers.  And the kicker was  Bread and--Ham.
